District of SparwoodPublic Works - Utilities SupervisorFull-Time, Permanent CUPE Position The District of Sparwood is a friendly and welcoming community of approximately 4,100 people, nestled in the heart of the Elk Valley in the Southeast Kootenays. Sparwood offers year-round recreational opportunities including trail systems for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing as well as world class hunting and fishing.Under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, the Utilities Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of the Utilities Crew including planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning, overseeing, and assisting in the day-to-day work related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of utility systems. These systems include; water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment and storm water collection.The successful individual will be proficient at operating light trucks and equipment, be able to perform manual labour and can provide input on modifications or improvements to Public Works Department policies, procedures and practices to improve the functions and safety of the department?s operations.EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE: Grade 12 or equivalent Valid Class 5 BC Driver?s License, with Airbrakes endorsement EOCP Water Distribution Level 2, Wastewater Collection 2 and Wastewater Treatment 2 (or equivalent education and experience) Significant (minimum 10 years) experience in construction, maintenance and operation of water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, storm water collection and other related infrastructure activities Recent and significant experience (minimum 5 years) in the safe operation of heavy equipment (Grader, Back-Hoe, Front End Loader, Dump Truck, Snowplow, etc.). Some (minimum 3 years) experience supervising in a Public Works environmentREQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES / WORK DEMANDS: Demonstrated strong leadership, communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage change and direct multiple employees Ability to plan, organize and prioritize the work of self, employees and contractors to meet deadlines Demonstrated computer skills with the capacity to learn relevant computer software programs Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy-duty equipment and related tools, including excavation Ability to continuously use hand tools, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day; occasionally work in confined spaces, and frequently work in inclement weather SALARY: This vacancy is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The 2024 hourly wage rate is $44.45/hour as per the current collective agreement.
