*Purpose*
As an addition to our internal legal team, the RMA Legal Counsel will handle assigned litigation matters on behalf of the Genesis Reciprocal Insurance Exchange (Genesis), as well as general legal matters impacting various departments at RMA. Under the direction of General Counsel, the position will be responsible to offer legal opinions, defend legal actions, assist in claims settlement, and otherwise act in the interests of RMA and Genesis as required by the management team.
The Legal Counsel will have access to highly confidential member and association information, and it is expected and required information be held in the strictest confidence.
*Responsibilities and Activities:*
* Handling a caseload of varied and complex litigation files.
* Court and court-related appearances, including, questioning, mediation, applications, and trials.
* Assisting in the operation of the insurance litigation program to support Genesis.
* Ensuring a strong and productive relationship with RMA Insurance claims team.
* Assisting in the refinement of policy wordings when required.
* Identifying and developing strategies to enhance the efficiency of the RMA Insurance program as it relates to legal exposures.
* Monitoring changes in the legal environment which will affect the operations of the RMA Insurance program.
* Maintaining accurate documentation/information on all claim files assigned.
* Preparing reports to management which accurately reflect loss development, potential/actual financial exposure, coverage issues, claim and recovery strategies.
* Provide such other support and advice as requested by the RMA senior management team.
*SKILLS/EXPERTISE REQUIRED:*
As legal counsel your primary role will be to defend and manage multiple areas of primarily liability insurance matters. These include occupiers? liability, municipal errors and omissions, wrongful dismissal and employment liability, and bodily injury claims. The ideal candidate would require proven expertise in at least two of these areas. The position requires exceptional organizational, problem-solving, prioritizing, and multitasking skills. Excellent written and oral advocacy skills and strong legal research expertise are required. The successful candidate will work independently as well as collaborate with RMA members, legal and insurance professionals.
*Education and Professional Designations:*
* A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a recognized Canadian (or equivalent) law school.
* A member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta.
* 3+ years of relevant experience in the area of civil litigation
* Experience in insurance defense and employment litigation would be an asset.
* Thorough knowledge of the _Insurance Act_ and the _Municipal Government Act_ of Alberta.
* Working knowledge of contractual liability.
