The Nunavut government announced its Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) Quality Framework Action Plan, to be implemented from 2024 to 2033. The plan includes enhancing the ELCC workforce through several initiatives including expanding early childhood educator certification in collaboration with Nunavut Arctic College and creating a team to provide in-person and virtual training.
Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) is allocating $1.38M for Inunnguinirmut Tukimuattittijiit to review Inuit-led and delivered early childhood services options. The review will support the use of $16.4M budgeted for governance of the Indigenous Early Learning and Child Care system. NTI is also providing funding towards renovating long term care facilities in three communities, developing laboratory and research capacity, developing an infrastructure assessment, and constructing three daycares.
The Nunavut government is expanding the full-day kindergarten pilot program to Gjoa Haven, Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, Qikiqtarjuaq, Resolute Bay, Sanikiluaq and Taloyoak. Kindergarten at schools in these communities will begin full-day programs in the next school year.
