The Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO) is partnering with the Business Council of Manitoba to offer 150 scholarships to Indigenous students over the next five years. Awards of $3,000 are available to students who are pursuing a career in health care and who belong to one of the 33 First Nations communities represented by the SCO.

The Government of Canada has signed a health governance agreement with the Southern Chiefs Organization, establishing a new health authority. The Southern First Nations Health Authority will encompass 34 southern Manitoba First Nations, allowing these communities to lead the decision-making processes concerning their health services.

Manitoba’s public health care entity, Shared Health, has closed more than 50 administrative support contracts with outside vendors. The organization will either end these projects or take responsibility for them internally, and expects to save $7.5M annually from these changes.

The Government of Manitoba is adding nine new inpatient beds at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre, part of a $7.8M renovation that will also increase endoscopy capacity and space for cancer patients. Construction is expected to be complete this summer.
