The Government of British Columbia is providing $10M to help B.C. tree fruit farmers to rebuild after several difficult seasons. The funding will be available to farmers throughout the province and will be based on acreage. Eligible uses for the one-time payment includes tools, training, capital for farm improvement, farm debt repayment and farm wages.

According to a report from the Canadian Tree Nursery Association, more than half of Canada’s tree seedlings are grown in British Columbia. The industry is expected to grow following a sharp increase in wildfire activity across Canada. The association estimates it will take 5.3B seedlings to plant only 15% of Canadian forests burned by wildfire in 2023 and 2024, which would create nearly 31K jobs.

The fund will help cover things like protective covers, heaters, sprinklers and shade protection. The Government of British Columbia is committing $55.5M to plant 50 million trees in 2024. Natural Resources Canada is also contributing $19.5M to the efforts as part of the Forest Ministry’s reforestation program. More than 10 billion trees have been planted since the program began in 1930.
