The Regional District of Nanaimo has reached an agreement with Telus and Rogers Communications for a new cell tower to provide coverage for the Hammond Bay area. The regional district will provide the land for the project.

Work has begun on Allenby Road in Duncan to reopen the route to traffic. The road has been closed due to instability since flooding in 2021. Work to open the road to single-lane-alternating traffic will complete in September 2024. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will then look into long-term options for slope remediation to allow the road to fully reopen.
