The Fort Simpson ice river crossing is not solid enough yet for vehicles to cross. The crossing is usually open to vehicles by November 29. Community members have had to cross by helicopter, fly to another community via airplane, or cross by snowmobile.

The Liard River is late to freeze, cutting off the Liidlii Kue First Nation from the rest of the Northwest Territories. The ice is not solid enough for vehicles to cross, reducing access to essential services, supplies, and other opportunities. Hunting, fishing, and trapping are also limited by the late freeze. The ice is usually open for crossing by November 29.
