De Havilland is hiring at its North Saanich manufacturing plant to build firefighting planes for the European Union. The company is looking to expand to a 500-person workforce by the end of the year. The over $1B deal will create 650 jobs at De Havilland Canada and support 2.6K additional jobs in the supply chain.

The San Group is temporarily curtailing operations on October 17 for its sawmill and on October 21 for its manufacturing plant in Port Alberni. The temporary curtailment is due to a shortage of logs and affects 75 workers for a minimum of two weeks. San Group is hoping to resume operations in early November.

The Government of B.C. is providing $5M towards ten manufacturing projects on Vancouver Island. Ron Anderson & Sons Ltd., a Chemainus-based wood-product manufacturer, will receive $2M to diversify its products and create 35 full-time jobs. Aquila Cedar Products Ltd., a Parksville-based wood products manufacturer, is receiving $879K to buy new equipment and to retrofit its manufacturing site.
