The Government of British Columbia is providing $10M to help B.C. tree fruit farmers to rebuild after several difficult seasons. The funding will be available to farmers throughout the province and will be based on acreage. Eligible uses for the one-time payment includes tools, training, capital for farm improvement, farm debt repayment and farm wages.

According to a report from the Canadian Tree Nursery Association, more than half of Canada’s tree seedlings are grown in British Columbia. The industry is expected to grow following a sharp increase in wildfire activity across Canada. The association estimates it will take 5.3B seedlings to plant only 15% of Canadian forests burned by wildfire in 2023 and 2024, which would create nearly 31K jobs.

The Government of British Columbia has created a new $5M Tree Fruit Climate Resiliency program to support tree-fruit growers in case of extreme weather. The fund will help cover things like protective covers, heaters, sprinklers and shade protection. The program is also open to applications for innovative projects that boost the industry’s resiliency.

The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has approved a new forest fertilization project to sequester carbon dioxide in forests and to improve timber volumes for harvesting. The project is funded through the Government of British Columbia’s Forest Investment Program.

The Government of British Columbia is providing the Nelson-based Youth Climate Corps B.C. with $3M to hire more young people in jobs that address climate change. The group works with local governments and First Nation communities to build youth climate leadership in wildfire risk reduction, local food security, energy efficiency, ecosystem restoration and community engagement.

The Government of British Columbia is committing $55.5M to plant 50 million trees in 2024. Natural Resources Canada is also contributing $19.5M to the efforts as part of the Forest Ministry’s reforestation program. More than 10 billion trees have been planted since the program began in 1930.
